| Any remote start kit on a manual will need to bypass the clutch interlock switch when remote starting. A good install will do this via a relay so the interlock still functions when you try to start the car normally. (i.e. you have to push in the clutch). Wiring the remote start to ensure the parking brake is engaged is slightly better than nothing, but I wouldn't consider it a fail safe. Do you trust your ebrake to hold if you crank the starter? There's no easy way to know your brake is "tight" enough to hold. The neutral safety switch is the way to go. If the remote starter is wired properly to the neutral safety switch (our 5 speeds do have the switch not all manuals do) then you can't start the car if it's in gear. If he didn't add this protection circuit when he did the swap, then bad juju. An automatic would be different; there is a factory interlock to make sure the car is in park when starting and there would be no additional wiring required to make the remote starter honor this.
